Nothing screams summer to me than fresh, ruby-red, juicy watermelon. Oh how I adore them! I could eat them all summer and some. Now I am content with stuffing myself with fresh-cut watermelon, sprinkling of black pepper and black salt. But watermelon is one of those great summer fruits that works perfectly in both sweet and savory dishes. Toss with some heirloom tomatoes, cotijo cheese, it’s a refreshing salad or swirl in the ice cream maker for some sorbet.
To celebrate my love for watermelon and showcase it’s versatility I made some watermelon-tequila cocktails. Grilling fresh watermelon intensifies the delicate sweetness of the fruit, spiked with some hot sauce and mint, this cocktail just might become your pool side favorite to hang out with.
I paired Cat in Heat Hot Sauce (Fat Cat Gourmet Foods) as it is smoky with an ever-increasing level that lingers in the mouth. It compliments sweet watermelon beautifully, as you first taste the vibrant and fresh watermelon juice and then it’s BANG!! It’s zingy, spicy, tangy, cooling, and so addictive that you can’t help but crave a few more sips!
To go with my spiced cocktail, try BG Garden’s Pork Kabobs, whose motto is: “Country living bought me to the cyber world sharing the good things found in the garden growing. No soil needed, just a passion for life!” Here’s the recipe and video link.
Grilled Watermelon-Tequila Cocktail
Be warned – this one burns but it is a ‘good’ burn. Grilling the watermelon imparts natural sweetness to the drink. Note, I haven’t added any sugar or simple syrup to this drink. Just a hint of agave syrup and the delicate sweetness of the melon does the rest. Feel free to omit the tequila for 21 and under.
Ingredients:
- 1 seedless watermelon, cut into 2″ slices with rind
- 1 heaped tsp or more Cat in Heat Hot Sauce
- ¼ cup mint leaves
- 1 1/4 cups white tequila (substitute with your fav.)
- 1/2 cup fresh lime juice
- ¼ cup agave syrup
- 1 tsp black salt
- Ice
Directions:
- Grill the watermelon slices until charred on both sides, let cool.
- Place the grilled watermelon (rind removed) and mint in a pitcher and crush until broken down.
- Stir in tequila, lime juice, hot sauce, black salt, and agave syrup. Fill with ice.
- Stir well and pour into glasses filled with ice.
What is your choice of drink to cool off in the summer? Do you pair fruits with spice? I would love to hear from you….until next time, have a spicy-licious day!!

Thanks Stacy! Fruits and Spices Compliment each other beautifully if they are used with caution and balance the sweet and heat…Cheers!
Oooh! That sounds really good! I’m all about rum & coke or pina coladas in the summer – but this one is definitely getting added to the list. I hadn’t thought of pairing fruits with spice, but I’m changing my thought-process on that, now! 🙂
